Custom Flags for Schools, Teams, and Local Events: Sizes, Materials, and How Long They Take

Who orders custom flags around here

The requests that come into our Woodstock shop follow a familiar pattern. A school wants its crest flying under the American flag on the front pole. A travel team wants a flag for the fence, the dugout, or the team photo. A business wants its logo over the entrance. A town festival, a reunion, a Scout troop, a dealership event — anywhere a group wants to be recognized from the road, a custom flag does the job in a way a banner sometimes cannot, because a flag moves. It catches the eye precisely because it will not sit still.

Our custom flags are manufactured in the USA by Flagsource; Flagsource Southeast is your local distributor, sales, and service team — which means you order close to home, talk to people who also service your pole, and get straight answers on sizing and timing.

Sizes: from 2x3 ft to 6x10 ft

Custom flags through us run from 2x3 ft up to 6x10 ft. Choosing a size is mostly about where the flag will fly and how far away people will read it:

  • 2x3 ft: indoor displays, small poles, parade and ceremony use, and anywhere the audience is close.
  • 3x5 ft: the most common custom size — right for most school, team, and business poles, and the standard pairing under a U.S. flag on a typical pole.
  • 4x6 ft: a step up for taller poles and wider-open spaces, where a 3x5 starts to look small.
  • 5x8 ft and 6x10 ft: large poles, big lots, and maximum roadside presence. If your flag needs to be read from a moving car, bigger is doing real work for you.

One practical tip: if your custom flag will fly under an American flag on the same pole, size it at or below the U.S. flag's size, and make sure your pole and halyard setup are suited to flying two flags — if you are not sure, ask us before you order, not after.

Design matters as much as size. Bold shapes and a few words in large type read at distance; small text and fine detail do not. A design that looks sharp on a phone screen can vanish at fifty feet, and we will tell you honestly if yours needs simplifying.

Materials: nylon, polyester, and cotton-blend

Nylon is the versatile default. It is lightweight, flies in a light breeze, shows color vividly, and suits most schools, teams, and businesses — especially flags flown in the daytime and brought in, or flown at sheltered sites.

Polyester is the workhorse. Heavier and tougher, it is the choice for large flags, exposed sites, and flags that will fly around the clock or through rough weather. If your custom flag is going up on an open field or a hilltop and staying there, polyester earns its keep.

Cotton-blend is the traditional option. It has the classic look and feel many people want for indoor display, ceremonies, presentations, and keepsake flags. It is not the fabric for permanent outdoor flying in Georgia weather — treat it as the dress uniform, not the work clothes.

How long do custom flags take?

Plan on about 2–4 weeks for a typical custom flag, from an approved design to a flag in your hands. The clock depends on the size, the material, and the complexity of the artwork — and on how quickly the design gets finalized and approved.

That timeline drives the single most common piece of advice we give: order backwards from your date. First day of school, homecoming, the season opener, the festival weekend — count back at least a month, and come to us then, not the week before. Rush situations happen and we will always tell you honestly what is possible, but a flag ordered with breathing room is a flag that arrives with time to spare.

Have your artwork ready if you can — a clean logo or design file speeds everything up — but if all you have is an idea or a rough sketch, that is a fine place to start the conversation too.

Ready to start yours?

The first step is our Submit a Design form on the main site. Send us the design, the size you have in mind, and the date you need it by, and we will come back with guidance on material, a quote, and a realistic timeline.
